The Author

Susan Palmer cannot remember a time when she was not interested in music. She began playing the cello in the elementary school music program in Portland, Oregon, and at age 11, she rented her first guitar from Tigard Music. She immediately began learning riffs off the radio and composing her own songs, which she performed with several bands throughout her teenage years.

She studied music at Gonzaga University and graduated from Seattle University in 1997. In her 20’s she suffered from ulcerative colitis and eventually underwent two successful surgeries that restored her health, with the exception of a hand injury that was brought on by a medication. Due to the injury, she has channeled her love of music into a unique series of method books.

Susan has always approached her teaching with passion, empathy and seriousness, and these ideals are reflected in her book as well as in her relations with other teachers. For her, the beauty of The Guitar Lesson Companion is the way that each teacher uses it to enhance her or his individual teaching style.

Currently, Susan Palmer is the guitar instructor at Seattle University, where she is working on Volume 2 of her Companion series.

I wrote this book with two things in mind: Most teachers agree that there are certain concepts that are important for every guitar player to understand; and each teacher has a unique way of explaining and applying those concepts to her/his students - Susan Palmer, Teacher and Author
